The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under India’s Ministry of Power, celebrated its 22nd Foundation Day on March 1, 2024, highlighting the theme “Energy Transition through Electrification and Decarbonization in India.” The event took place in New Delhi and featured key initiatives including the launch of the 5th edition of the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI 2023), new Standards and Labeling Programs for Packaged Boilers and Visi Coolers, and the inaugural edition of India EV Digest.
Key Launches and Initiatives:
- State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI 2023): Developed in collaboration with the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), this index assesses the energy efficiency progress of states and union territories across seven sectors, ranking them as ‘Front Runner’, ‘Achiever’, ‘Contender’, or ‘Aspirant’.
- Top performers include Karnataka, Haryana, and Maharashtra.
- Standards and Labeling Programs:
- Packaged Boilers: These are now subject to a new labeling program that rates boilers from 1 to 5 stars based on thermal efficiency, valid through December 2026.
- Visi Coolers: Another program aimed at commercial beverage coolers to improve energy efficiency, with labeling becoming mandatory post-2026.
- India EV Digest: This publication outlines the growth of electric vehicles (EVs) in India and supports the national target of achieving a 30% EV share in vehicle sales by 2030.
Exhibition and Insights:
The celebration also featured an exhibition on Electric Mobility and Electric Cooking, inaugurated by Union Minister Raj Kumar Singh. This exhibition emphasized the practical aspects of India’s energy transition efforts.
Energy Efficiency and Environmental Impact:
- The new initiatives are projected to yield substantial energy savings and significant reductions in CO2 emissions over the coming decade.
- For instance, the packaged boilers program is expected to save around 3.1 million Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (TOE) and reduce emissions by 7.23 million tonnes of CO2 by 2033.
The Foundation Day event not only commemorates BEE’s past achievements but also sets the stage for future advancements in India’s journey towards a more efficient and sustainable energy landscape.
