The Global Cities Index 2024 by Oxford Economics ranked Delhi as the top Indian city at 350th position out of the world’s largest 1,000 cities. New York City leads the global ranking, followed by London and San Jose. The cities covered in the index contribute 60% of the global GDP as of 2023.
Index Methodology and Categories
The index evaluates 1,000 cities from 163 countries across 27 indicators within five categories: Economics (30%), Human Capital (25%), Quality of Life (25%), Environment (10%), and Governance (10%). The cities are also grouped by region, with notable counts in North America, Western Europe, and East Asia.
Performance of Indian Cities
Among Indian cities, Delhi excelled particularly in Economics, Human Capital, and Quality of Life, though it ranked poorly in Environment (973rd). All Indian cities shared a uniform rank of 380th in Governance. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kochi were other prominent Indian cities in the index, with Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh ranked lowest among them at 1000th.
Global Ranking Highlights
The top ten global cities predominantly hail from North America, Western Europe, and East Asia. New York achieved the highest score in Economics, while London led in Human Capital. Grenoble, France, topped the Quality of Life category. In terms of Environment, Suva in Fiji received the highest score. Governance was best managed by cities in New Zealand, including Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington.
