Overview of TTDI 2024 Rankings
The World Economic Forum (WEF), in collaboration with the University of Surrey, UK, released the 2nd edition of the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI 2024), ranking India 39th among 119 countries with a score of 4.25. This marks an improvement from its 54th position in 2021. The USA led the index with a score of 5.24, followed by Spain and Japan. Mali was at the bottom with a score of 2.78.
Indian Performance and Global Comparison
India stood out in South Asia and among lower-middle-income countries, showcasing strengths in price competitiveness (18th), air and port infrastructure (26th, 25th respectively), and natural and cultural resources, with top ten rankings in each. It remains one of the three countries globally ranked in the top ten across all resource pillars.
Global Recovery and Performance Trends
The index noted significant recovery in global travel and tourism sectors post-pandemic. West Asia recorded the highest increase in international tourist arrivals, surpassing 2019 levels by 20%, while Europe, Africa, and the Americas achieved around 90% of their 2019 tourist volumes. Notably, economies like Saudi Arabia and the UAE showed remarkable improvement in their TTDI scores.
Developing Nations Showing Notable Gains
Developing countries displayed significant progress, with Uzbekistan, Côte d’Ivoire, Albania, Tanzania, and Indonesia among those with the most notable improvements in their rankings.
