Campaign Overview: The Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) have collaboratively initiated a nationwide awareness campaign titled “Mera pehla vote desh ke liye” (my first vote for the country). This campaign, endorsed by Union Minister Anurag Thakur, is designed to inspire first-time voters to actively participate in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Key Launch Feature:

  • Anthem Video: Anurag Thakur also introduced a campaign anthem video aimed at raising awareness among new voters about the importance of their electoral contribution.

Campaign Activities:

  • Venue: Events will be hosted across universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions.
  • Modes of Engagement:
    • In-person events and interactive workshops on understanding voting and the electoral process.
    • Online competitions hosted on the MyGov platform, featuring:
      • Blog writing, podcasts, debates, essays, quizzes, extempore, and battle of bands.
  • Voter’s Pledge: Encourages youth to commit to voting via taking a pledge on the official Electoral Commission website (ecisveep.nic.in).
  • Digital Tools: Promotion of the Voter Helpline app to assist new voters with their queries and electoral needs.

Insights on Lok Sabha:

  • Composition and Term:
    • Originally set to have 552 seats, the Lok Sabha currently comprises 543 elected members (530 from states and 13 from Union Territories) following the removal of 2 seats reserved for the Anglo-Indian community by the 104th Constitutional Amendment Act of 2019.
    • The Lok Sabha has a term of 5 years, with the current term expiring on June 16, 2024.

About Rajya Sabha:

  • Constitutional Capacity:
    • The Rajya Sabha or Council of States is capped at 250 seats, with 238 members from states and UTs and 12 nominated by the President.
    • Presently, it has 245 members.

Conclusion: The “Mera pehla vote desh ke liye” campaign is a significant move to bolster the democratic process in India, specifically targeting youth engagement through creative and interactive platforms. This initiative not only prepares first-time voters for their crucial role in the 2024 elections but also aims to strengthen India’s electoral engagement during the critical period of ‘Amrit Kaal’, leading to the nation’s centennial of independence in 2047.
