Ministry of Heavy Industries Launches Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024

Introduction: The Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, has launched the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 (EMPS 2024), effective from April 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024. This scheme aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India.

Transition from FAME-II:

  • FAME-II Scheme: The second phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-II) scheme ends on March 31, 2024. Subsidies under this scheme are available for e-vehicles sold until March 31, 2024, or until funds are exhausted.

About EMPS 2024:

  • Launch Date: Introduced on March 13, 2024.
  • Duration: April 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024.
  • Budget: Rs 500 crore.
  • Focus: Promotion of electric two-wheelers (e-2w) and electric three-wheelers (e-3w), including registered e-rickshaws, carts, and L5 (e-3w) vehicles.

Financial Support:

  • Two-Wheelers: Up to Rs 10,000 per e-2w, supporting approximately 3.33 lakh vehicles.
  • Small Three-Wheelers: Up to Rs 25,000 per vehicle, covering more than 41,000 e-rickshaws and e-carts.
  • Large Three-Wheelers: Up to Rs 50,000 per vehicle.

Background on FAME India:

  • Introduction: Launched in 2015 under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan.
  • Objective: Promote the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles through purchase incentives.
  • Phases:
    • FAME-I: Ran from 2015 to 2019.
    • FAME-II: Implemented from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2024, with a budget outlay of Rs 10,000 crore. Provided incentives for e-buses, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers for public transportation and commercial use.
