Starting from 26th June 2024, the government will begin the partial implementation of the new Telecommunications Act. This Act marks a major legislative overhaul by repealing three outdated laws:
- The 138-year-old Indian Telegraph Act, 1885
- The Wireless Telegraph Act, 1933
- The Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1950
Introduction of Digital Bharat Nidhi
As part of the new telecommunications framework, the Digital Bharat Nidhi will be established, replacing the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF). The USOF, which was originally established under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, aimed to provide universal access to telecommunications services across India. The new Digital Bharat Nidhi will continue this mission but with a modernized approach to support the expanding digital infrastructure and connectivity needs of the country.
The restructured framework is expected to address contemporary challenges and opportunities in the telecommunications sector, promoting greater access, efficiency, and innovation in India’s digital landscape.
